In a bid to address the persistent issue of youth unemployment in Ghana, the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) has initiated a groundbreaking project – opening its portal for enrollment in the Artisanal Trades and Vocation Module.

The objective is to generate a minimum of 20,000 sustainable jobs over the next two years.

Recognising youth unemployment as a significant national security concern, the YEA has strategically collaborated with a reputable private sector player, duly registered and licenced in Ghana.

This public-private partnership (PPP) aims to complement existing youth employment initiatives and government efforts.

The project, spanning ten relevant trades and vocations, seeks to build the capacity of unemployed and underemployed youth nationwide. Through comprehensive training and the provision of startup tools, the goal is to empower a minimum 20,000 young men and women by end-2024.

Following six months of technical training, beneficiaries will receive quality startup tools and equipment, coupled with entrepreneurship and business management training.

In a commitment to gender inclusivity, a substantial number of beneficiary slots will be allocated to young women; thus elevating the affirmative action principle.

Moreover, the initiative aims to assist trainees in accessing both local and international markets for their products and services, showcasing Ghana’s technical expertise globally and promoting tourism while boosting foreign exchange.

The YEA emphasises the model’s core elements – comprehensive technical training, entrepreneurship and business management.

The Agency stated: “We are keen on developing local small-scale businesses to promote commerce and job opportunities, scaling-up informal apprenticeships under TVET for sustainable employment and entrepreneurship”.

To propel the initiative forward, YEA plans to establish an online database/pool of qualified African Industrial Solution artisans to reinforce the model’s success.

As the portal for registration is now live, interested applicants can apply at www.yea.gov.gh or apply.yea.gov.gh. Additionally, the Youth Employment Agency encourages applicants to engage through their official social media platforms for more information.
