The Public Accounts Committee of Parliament (PAC) has directed the management of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) to engage the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to recover more than GH¢300,000 owed by 72 police stations and posts across the country.

The directive was issued during a sitting of the Public Accounts Committee, where concerns were raised over outstanding payments owed to the Community Water and Sanitation Agency by various institutions.

The Committee’s Chairperson, Abena Osei-Asare, expressed concern about the failure of the affected police stations to settle their water bills and questioned why the agency had not taken steps to recover the money from the appropriate authorities.

According to Abena Osei-Asare, the amount owed by the 72 police facilities, although significant to the Community Water and Sanitation Agency, could be resolved through direct engagement with the leadership of the Ghana Police Service.

She therefore instructed the management of the agency to approach the Inspector-General of Police and seek his intervention to ensure that the outstanding debt is settled.

“You think the IGP would be happy that 72 police posts or police stations owe just GH¢300,000? If you go to him today, he will write a cheque for you. GH¢300,000 for 72 posts and this is how you want to embarrass the police? That 72 of their outfits owe GH¢300,000 to Community Water. You better go to the IGP and collect the money.”

The more than GH¢300,000 debt reportedly accumulated from water services provided to the affected police stations and posts.

PAC indicated that the continued existence of such arrears could have implications for the financial operations of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency, particularly if institutions fail to settle their bills on time.
