‘I won’t tell the world I was only a driver’s mate during challenges’

During her official introduction as the running mate for National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama in Accra, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang assured him of her commitment to shared success and accountability in their administration, promising not to diminish her role in times of difficulty.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia had previously referred to himself as a “driver’s mate,” suggesting limitations in addressing governmental challenges. However, Prof Opoku-Agyemang pledged to stand by Mahama, affirming, “I will share in our collective successes and share responsibility for our setbacks if any. And at the time of reckoning, Your Excellency John Mahama, I will not in advancement of self-serving ambition declare to the whole world that I was only the driver’s mate.”

Addressing attendees at her unveiling, the former Education Minister emphasized that the upcoming elections were not solely about returning the NDC to power but about a broader purpose. She articulated a vision for a Ghana free from corruption, greed, and despair, emphasizing the importance of healing divisions and restoring confidence and hope among citizens.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang stressed the need for a Ghana where democracy thrives, citizens are respected, and basic necessities are accessible to all. She called for unity in rebuilding the nation, highlighting the NDC’s historical achievements and capacity for transformative change.
