I didn’t resign – Carlos Queiroz clears air on Black Stars coaching role

Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz insists that he hasn’t tendered in his resignation despite the swirling rumours about his future.

Queiroz, who was appointed as head coach of Ghana’s senior national team in April, succeeded erstwhile boss Otto Addo after a string of poor results.

The veteran tactician was handed a four-month contract, which runs out in August 2026.

As part of his responsibilities, Queiroz was tasked to lead the Black Stars to the 2026 World Cup.

The former Portugal head coach steered Ghana to a round of 32 finish following a third-placed finish in the group stages, where the team edged out Panama, played out a goalless stalemate with England and lost 2-1 to Croatia.

Following Ghana’s exit at the 2026 World Cup, Queiroz issued a statement on social media, detailing the Black Stars’ journey at the global stage while expressing his gratitude.

“To my president and board, thank you so much for the opportunity to serve the Ghana national football team,” Queiroz wrote.

“It was an honour and privilege to serve the country and the Black Stars. To my players and staff, my deepest gratitude for your courage, commitment and unwavering dedication to the team. To the fans, we cannot claim complete sporting satisfaction, but we can proudly say that we honoured the colours of Ghana and restored respect and credibility to the Black Stars on football’s greatest stage.”

The said message has been misinterpreted by many as a resignation from the former Manchester United assistant coach, who has firmly debunked the assertion.

“I didn’t resign. I sent a message of gratitude, Queiroz said in a viral video on social media while speaking to a Ghanaian fan in the United States together with his wife.

Despite the clarification of his stance as Black Stars head coach, the Ghana Football Association are yet to confirm whether the contract of Queiroz would be extended beyond the agreed four-month tenure.

Ghana will next be in action on September 23, when they take on Ivory Coast in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
