In a highly anticipated move, Ghana Premier League giants Accra Hearts of Oak has officially introduced Dutch trainer Martin Koopman as their new head coach in preparation for the upcoming season.

Following persistent speculation in the media, the club confirmed Koopman’s appointment at the Pobiman Complex yesterday as the team defeated Miracle Land FC 11-1.

Koopman steps into the role, succeeding Serbian tactician Slavko Matic, who held the position previously. Matic, the last substantive coach at Hearts of Oak, was selected after the departure of Samuel Boadu early in the previous season. While Matic initiated his tenure on a positive note, the team’s performance gradually faltered, prompting discontent among fans and ultimately leading to his mid-season departure.

The Phobians navigated a challenging phase under interim manager David Ocloo, securing their survival from relegation on the final day. Ocloo has since moved on to join their archrivals, Asante Kotoko.

With his extensive experience, Koopman is anticipated to uplift the performance of the reigning 2020/21 Ghana Premier League champions. As he assumes leadership, the team continues their pre-season training regimen.

Koopman, a seasoned 67-year-old coach, boasts a remarkable coaching background, having overseen notable teams such as RKC Waalwijk and Al-Nassr in the past.

The upcoming 2023/24 Ghana Premier League season opener will mark a pivotal moment for Koopman as he leads Hearts of Oak into their first competitive match under his guidance. The team is set to clash with Real Tamale United at the Aliu Mahama Stadium in what promises to be a significant encounter.
