Ghana Registered Nurses And Midwives Association (GRNMA) has held Women and Gender Seminar in Kumasi.

The seminar was under the theme, ‘Empowering Women To Take Advantage of Their Lives Through Vaccination Against Cervical Cancer’.

Speaking in an interview with mytimefm.com the National Coordinator and Chairperson for GRNMA Mrs. Irene Mensah-Jacobs bemoaned that women are severely perished by cervical cancer.

Mrs Mensah- Jacobs giving the statistics revealed that 2,797 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2021 and 1,699 perished.

She said 1,717 women were diagnosed with the cancer in 2019.

“1,682 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2018, 1,663 were diagnosed in 2017 and 1,626 were diagnosed in 2016,” she further revealed.

Mrs Mensah-Jacobs advised women to periodically visit the hospital to screen and vaccinate against the cancer.

“It’s necessary. Think about your health and think about your children,” she pleaded through mytimefm.com’s Nana Owusu Achiaw.

The GRNMA bemoaned that some women believe cervical cancer or any form of cancer is spiritual.

She urged Nurses and Midwives to educate women and the public at large about cervical cancer.

Mrs Mensah-Jacobs petitioned the government to add free screening of cervical cancer to the National Health Insurance Scheme programs to help fight cervical cancer.

For her part, Miss Dorcas Yeboah, Oncology Nurse at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital who was the keynote speaker bemoaned that several cases of cervical cancer are reported at the Regional Hospital.

Miss Yeboah disclosed that a major cause of the cervical cancer is oral sex and therefore made a passionate appeal to people to abstain from it.

She urged Nurses and Women to protect themselves when engaging in sexual intercourse and go for regular screening and vaccination.

Adding his voice, Mr Jones Afriyie-Anto, Ashanti Regional Chairman for GRNMA stressed that cervical cancer is preventable.

He appealed to Nurses and Midwives to prevent the cancer and educate the populace on the dangers associated with it.
