The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has issued a summons for Members of Parliament to reconvene on Friday, May 17, as outlined in a letter dated May 10, 2024.
The decision to recall Parliament stems from a request made under Order 53 of the House’s Standing Orders by the Majority in Parliament. They assert that the recall is motivated by a sincere desire to address pressing national matters.
Of particular importance is the endorsement of the Appointments Committee’s 34th report, along with deliberations on a $150 million loan designated for the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project, deemed crucial for the country’s economic advancement.
Additionally, there is a focus on addressing tax exemption requests for specific beneficiaries under the 1D1F Programme.
Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, speaking to reporters in Parliament, emphasized the significance of the petition to the Speaker, which garnered signatures from over a hundred caucus members.
He highlighted the need for constructive dialogue, noting that while disagreements are inevitable in politics, they should not impede governmental functions.
Afenyo-Markin clarified that the petition adheres to constitutional provisions, referencing Article 112(3) and Order 53 of the standing orders, and affirmed the participation of more than the required 15% of total parliamentary membership, totaling over 100 members.
