A two-month-old baby died of malnutrition in Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza City after his family was unable to find milk and basic supplies, amid a deepening humanitarian crisis in the enclave because of Israel’s months-long war.
Mahmoud Fattouh was rushed to the ICU but did not survive. Healthcare officials in Gaza said that signs of weakness and paleness were apparent in newborns because their mothers were malnourished and unable to produce enough milk to feed them, warning that the absence of proper aid would lead to more deaths in Gaza.
After more than four months of shortages inside the besieged Gaza Strip, the World Food Programme said this week its teams had reported “unprecedented levels of desperation”, while the United Nations warned that 2.2 million people were on the brink of famine.
Israel’s war cabinet has meanwhile discussed the next steps for mediated talks towards a hostage deal with Hamas and a truce in the battered Palestinian territory and said a delegation will travel to Qatar “in the coming days” to continue negotiations
At least 29,692 Palestinians have been killed and 69,879 injured in Israel’s war on Gaza since October 7, the health ministry in Gaza said in a statement on Sunday.
