The Accra High Court on Wednesday afternoon found 6 persons guilty of plotting to overthrow the government.
They are Donya Kafui, aka Ezor (a blacksmith) and Bright Alan Debrah Ofosu (a fleet manager).
They were found guilty of conspiracy to commit treason and treason, while Johannes Zikpi (a civilian employee of the Ghana Armed Forces) was found guilty of conspiracy to commit high treason.
The three soldiers – Warrant Officer II Esther Saan Dekuwine , Lance Corporal Ali Solomon, and Corporal Sylvester Akanpewon , were found guilty of conspiracy to commit high treason.
However, two senior security officers and another soldier were not found guilty and were subsequently acquitted by the three-member panel of the court.
Wading his voice into the judgement on the Ama Ghana Morning Show on Time FM 97.7MHz, Anokye Frimpong, Private Legal Practitioner, noted that the 1992 Constitution of the Republic frowns on coup attempts.
He said a coup plotter would be sentenced to death if found guilty of conspiracy to commit high treason.
Lawyer Anokye Frimpong said the president will have to assent to the ruling of the Court before the plotters will be sentenced to death.
He recalled that apart from late President Jerry John Rawlings, no President has assented to the death sentence. He said if the President refused to append his signature on the ruling, the plotters would be put in condemned cells.
However, Lawyer Anokye Frimpong hinted the six coup plotters may be set free if a new government comes to power.
