Football superstar Lionel Messi created history on Wednesday (March 29) by becoming only the third player in the history of the beautiful game to score 100 or more goals in international matches.
The 35-year-old Argentine, who won the FIFA World Cup title with the South American giants in Qatar last year, achieved the milestone during Argentina’s international friendly match against Curacao, which is taking place at the Estadio Único Madre de Ciudades on Wednesday.
Playing in his 174th match for the three-time FIFA World Cup winners, Messi achieved the triple-figure mark in the 20th minute of the game when he found the back of the net to score his first goal of the match.
Messi received a beautiful pass from Giovani Lo Celso inside the penalty box, and then he dodged two defenders to find the back of the net. By scoring his 100th goal, Messi became the third footballer after former Iran centre forward Ali Daei and his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo to score a century of international goals. Daei was the first footballer to do so, whereas, with 122 goals from 198 matches, Ronaldo is the leading goalscorer in international matches.
