Independent Power Producers (IPPs) on 29th June 2023 directed its members to cut supply to the national grid from July 1.

The decision follows government’s inability to reach an agreement with the IPPs to settle an interim 30 percent debt payment out of a $1.78 billion owed.

Adam Yakubu, Research, Policy and Programmes Officer for Institute for Energy Security (IES) said should the IPPs cut the supply to the national grid Ghana’s system will collapse.

“If IPPs withdraws just 20 per cent of their supply, it will destroy our system,” he bemoaned.

Adam Yakubu said the Electricity Company of Ghana can’t build the power the country needs so the only solution will be dumsor.

He told Kwame Koranteng on Ama Ghana Morning Show on Time FM that ECG needs a competition.

He explained that private entities should be allowed to compete with ECG.

According to Adam Yakubu, competition will make headway.

“ECG is a state institution because of that there is bureaucracy in their system,” he noted.
