Power Crisis Silence Shows Lack of Leadership, Expert Says1 min read

Governance expert, Professor Baffour Agyemang-Duah, criticizes the government’s silence on the ongoing power crisis, calling it a demonstration of weak leadership.

According to Professor Agyemang-Duah, good governance requires addressing citizens’ concerns. He emphasizes the lack of updates from the government despite widespread frustration and complaints about the erratic power supply.

Speaking on JoyFM, he stated, “The President’s silence on this matter is deafening. Good governance involves responding to citizens’ concerns about essential services. So far, there seems to be an absence of leadership on this crisis.”

Professor Agyemang-Duah believes proactive leadership could have prevented the crisis. He highlights pre-existing disagreements within the energy sector that, if addressed behind closed doors, could have been resolved.

“We saw disagreements between GRIDCo, ECG, PURC, and others. This is where the President’s leadership was needed. Just like during COVID, where he kept us informed, the President should address the nation now. This nationwide crisis requires transparency and a public show of leadership,” he argued.

Professor Agyemang-Duah suggests the President convene energy sector players and outline a clear plan to rectify the situation. He emphasizes the lack of transparency and public concern from the government.

“There hasn’t been transparency or public concern displayed by the government. The nation is suffering without a serious response,” he concluded.

While calls for the Energy Minister’s resignation exist, Professor Agyemang-Duah reminds everyone that the President ultimately holds responsibility. He highlights the NDC’s past electoral defeat due to energy sector issues, implying the President needs to ensure competent leadership in this critical area.
